Estonia has one of the highest forest coverage percentages of nearly 50% amongst developed countries, which makes our wood and forest a highly valued and special national treasure that we wish to protect and sustain, while being one of the drivers of Estonian economy in the fields of wood processing and architecture.  We have yet to find the balance between preserving our nature and managing our forests in a climate neutral and valuable way.

What are the tools that can help in that? What new ways to better utilize wood as a building material and through that lessen the environmental effects of the construction industry? The main goal of the Garage48 Wood makeathon is to create and introduce new technological solutions that promote sustainable management and help to achieve a climate-neutral economy.

Once again we are looking for both physical and digital prototypes. Whether you are someone who works with a CNC machine, a chisel or a laptop - we welcome you!

Architects, product designers, wood technologists and chemists, engineers and industry practitioners, forestry experts, climate and environmental experts, software engineers, designers, data scientists, marketers and business visionaries.

WHAT IS A GARAGE48 HACKATHON ALL ABOUT?

Hackathon is a weekend-long intensive development event to work out new web and mobile applications or novel services and products and bring new startups to life. The event is open for both university students and already working specialists. We start on Friday with only one goal in mind - to have a working prototype by Sunday to present to the jury. All the teams will be supported by internationally experienced mentors throughout the event.

    WHO WILL OWN MY IDEA?

The developed product's IP remains the property of the team, who is participating in the program. If any outside party (investors, other companies, governmental organizations) wishes to proceed and acquire the prototype developed during the hackathon, a mutual agreement must be signed about the IP. The organizers, partners and sponsors of the program will not take over any rights or equity in the ideas at the hackathon. The team will agree among themselves on who owns a part of the idea.

    CAN I PARTICIPATE ONLINE?
Teams are expected to be present in Väimela, but a few team members can help online. All the pitching, checkpoints and mentoring will happen on the spot. Team members present in Väimela are responsible for the experience of online team members.

    WHAT ARE THE COVID-19 RULES?

Following the current regulations set out by the Estonian Government, only people that have a certificate of vaccination or recovery can attend the event.

    WHAT WILL ACCOMMODATION LOOK LIKE?

Accommodation will be provided to all participants - just take your sleeping bag, mattress and pillow with you and you have everything needed!

    HOW TO GET TO VÄIMELA?
Väimela is just on the outskirts of Võru. The easiest ways are by car or via bus from Tartu.

HOW WILL THE PRIZE MONEY BE DISTRIBUTED?
All the prize money will be subject to taxes and will be distributed by Garage48 or the challenge partner.

      INNOVATIVE VALORIZATION OF WOOD BIOMASS

Estonian Research Council is inviting researchers, business visionaries and technology experts to come together and use the wood makeathon as a platform to think of valorizing wood biomass in an innovative way, whether it be using chemistry, microbiology, physics or even gene technology. The outcome doesn’t have to be a prototype, it can also be a process description or an outline of a project.

Top teams will be supported in further prototyping of their solutions in Estonian Academy of Arts and TSENTER Competence Centre workshops and laboratories. 🧑‍🔬

TIMBER PRODUCTS and ARCHITECTURE for OLDER PEOPLE
      prize pool 2000€ 🌟

TSENTER Competence Centre and Ministry of Social Affairs invite you to develop solutions to support the needs of older people.
What does architecture that brings older people to enjoy the urban environment look and feel like? How should we design and build our public indoor spaces differently in order to make them inviting, comfortable and safe for people with lessened moving or visual abilities?
Enjoying the outdoors, exercising and getting fresh air in our forests is an essential element for keeping the body and mind healthy as we age. Are our recreation areas really accessible for older people or could we develop better support with proper paving and enough resting spots?
Can functional furniture made of wood support older people in living a long life at the comfort of their own home, or in turn make a caring facility feel more like home?

    METSÄ WOOD CHALLENGE

Metsä Wood challenges you to design novel wood-based solutions for urban multistory construction. The end result can be e.g. an element, module design or a structural system combining these.

We have two main requirements for a challenge entry:

    1. We ask you to use Kerto LVL as a primary structural material, but you are free to combine it with other materials of your choice.
    2. Entries need to be uploaded on Metsä Wood’s Opensourcewood.com platform.

Open Source Wood is an online platform promoting knowledge sharing and innovation in modular wood construction. All the designs on opensourcewood.com are shared under the Creative Commons 4.0 license and so freely available to anyone.

The winner of the challenge takes home a price of 2500€

The monetary prize pool for all challenges is subject to any taxes that apply.
TSENTER Centre of Competence for Wood Processing and Furniture Manufacturing is open for the Garage48 Future of Wood participants to make your craziest ideas into prototypes!

    PROTOTYPING MATERIALS
We will stock various prototyping materials for the makeathon. Please let us know what you need when registering for the event!
We're ready to do additional shopping on Saturday within reasonable wishes of the teams, but we prefer to be as prepared as possible. So please help us out here and let us know your needs. 🪵
