Kharkiv Cyber Security Hack!

In today's world, we all rely on technology more than we really want to. Therefore it’s important that technology is available, protected and secure. Unfortunately, the most technology available is quite vulnerable and can be easily hacked.

The first Garage48 hackathon has officially started in the city of students & youth - Kharkiv, Ukraine! This special hackathon event is focused on the many aspects of cyber security, which has a huge impact on our digital lives every single day. We gathered 70 highly enthusiastic people - most of the students, cyber security experts and project managers. Thanks to the great help of our top-notch Estonian & Ukrainian mentors, from the cyber security industry, we will push any idea to the limit!

The main aim of the Garage48 Cyber Security hackathon is to find solutions to some of the recurring cyber security problems or come up with completely fresh approaches which would take the cybersecurity to the next level. We would also touch upon the topic of Blockchain and its importance when speaking about cyber security.

The event is taking place in a carefully reconstructed factory built in 1933 and turned into a place for meeting friends and business partners, work & leisure. The famous Fabrika space is the heart of technology ideas in Kharkiv and provides our participants with the most inspiring and exciting venue for creating new ideas in town!

There were 11 ideas pitched from which 6 teams were formed. Meet the teams!

1. Social engineering training

Social Engineering Training proposes is a web-based application intended to teach employees cyber hygiene, e. g. how to prevent cyber-attacks, information loss, and identity theft. The application is interactive and simulates real-life situations, which users should identify and choose how to act. The product is intended for companies interested in protecting their business information and thus preventing money and property loss. As employees are in the majority of cases the target of cyber-attacks, the application with gamification elements and interactive components is an effective training tool and the acquired skills are easy to implement in real life.

2. Smart Block

Smart Block creates a simple and convenient device that provides an additional layer of high-level protection for your PC and can be integrated into other systems.

3. WatchBird

Watchbird is a tool for fishing and fraud detection during digital communication.

4.  Blockchain Auth

5. Tesseract
Simple and secure device for sending encrypted text messages over any low-quality audio medium.

6. ZeroDay

Zero Day is an alarming system which warns you in case a civil drone (mostly multi rotors with camera) is approaching your premises. The system detects unwanted eyes on the sky at your perimeter by detecting and analyzing radio signals, emitted by drone. Typical commercial drone detecting system, available on the market today, costs quite a lot and the team is working on a cheaper solution, which production costs will not exceed 8 k€. All this has become possible, because due to the availability of cheap SDR (software defined radio) components on the open market.

We are having 48 intensive and fun hours ahead during which the six teams will tirelessly develop their ideas!

You can watch their final pitches broadcasted LIVE on Sunday, 12.11 at 5.30PM on our Facebook page. Don't miss the chance to hear them!
