Founder of Garage48 Ragnar Sass have said: “Kenya has one of the most active IT and startup communities in Africa with plenty of talented developers. Garage48 is sure that in recent years we will hear more and more successful companies that are launched thanks to an idea to make the world a better place.”
Garage48 organizers and mentors arrive directly from Silicon Valley, New York and Europe to bring and share their knowledge and experience with Garage48 participants in Africa. The event is sponsored and mentored by Google and Nokia who provide world-class support by mentors and jury members and sponsorship to make the event happen.
Together with Google, Nokia and Blackberry, Garage48’s international web development competition heads to Kenya Strathmore University’s @iLabAfrica for 2011’s Garage48 Nairobi and Garage48 Kampala.
Spanning three intense days during 2 weekends in September this extreme “hack-a-thon” for web entrepreneurs, technology professionals, and marketers is the fourth event to be hosted by Garage48 in Africa, following successful events in Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda.
With Kenya’s growing and active community of talented IT and start-up communities, Nairobi is a fitting location for Garage48, an international event known for its intense focus, emphasis on teambuilding, and achievement in bringing ideas off the drawing board and into the real world.
Garage48 team is really excited to have the event @iLabAfrica. It is a new Centre of Excellence in ICT Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Incubation, and Policy Research for Africa, an independent entity in the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) at Strathmore University.
Richard from Garage48 Kampala organization team says: "Garage48 will go a long way in promoting the entrepreneurship spirit and the “getting things done” attitude among local participants. More to that, it will provide a platform for growth through networking and the pitch sessions, access to additional funding through the Garage48 brand."

@iLabAfrica has been established to address the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and contribute toward Kenya’s Vision 2030, as a research centre dedicated to leveraging the benefits of innovations in ICT, promoting entrepreneurship through nurturing and mentoring of young innovators via adequate training programmes and incubation facilities, as well as promoting a conducive environment in Africa through policy research. Our main aim is to foster capacity development, identify and support technological innovations that have the potential to become viable businesses and may have a social impact reaching the bottom of the pyramid. The centre also advises policy-makers on the policies that may be initiated to transform ICT into a genuine tool for sustainable development.
