Garage48 Kampala 2011 Winners and Projects

Garage48 in Kampala was our third hackathon in Africa to turn ideas into working prototype.   11 teams of developers, designers, marketers and entrepreneurs working hard over the weekend to launch their products (prototypes) for Sunday evening. Below you will find the winners and all other projects launched, plus people within those teams. Thanks to Google, Nokia, MTN Uganda and all participants - this was truly amazing weekend!
Technology enthusiasts and developers gathered in the MTN Warehouse in Kampala to build applications and turn ideas into real working prototypes within 48 hours. More than 60 tech driven people participate in working with 11 projects.

Almost 30 different ideas were pitched from mobile payment application to valuate used cars prices. Garage48 Kampala was happening from 23rd September throughout the weekend until 25th September Sunday evening. Several participants spent their night at the venue to make sure that many things would get done.

Somesha  - Garage48 Kampala 11 Winner


Website to find sponsors for children  on countryside to get educated. With small mobile payment everyone can help a specific child to get education (to pay for their schoolfee) in Uganda and get feedback on how the child is doing. *Somesha means educate in Swahili language. 

Ninja Kids - "Favourite of the Audience"

Educational learning game for kids, using Kinect Motion sensor on Windows platform (brand new Kinect for Windows SDK). Target group children between 5-10.

Zword - "Funniest app"

Android mobile game  where user can learn spelling while killing zombies. Targetgroup teenagers and grownups.

Myticket - "Best mobile app"

Simple mobile network based ticket selling and buying system. Alternative way to Eventbrite or any other e-ticket system.

In Uganda most of the people don’t have credit card, with this system they can get virtual Visa card to buy goods from foreign webshops. Customers pay through mobile payment and get individual credit card codes to make needed purchase.

Simbao.net - Automated betting platform

Betting in Uganda is done manually in kiosks right now, this new platform will take it to (mobile)internet and allow people to make bets without leaving their home.

Find businesses and services near you based on your cell location data. Local businesses can pay for showing their detailed information to customers.
