The WINNER of Garage48 Hardware & Arts 2017 CBMS Monitors Vehicle Battery State

The Garage48 Hardware & Arts 2017 was a blast! We had 175 participants, 36 pitched ideas and 21 working teams at the hackathon! This was already our 4th Garage48 Hardware & Arts event co-organised with the University of Tartu and Estonian Academy of Arts. The Hardware & Arts hackathon is truly like a second family thanks to the many participants and our many long-term partners of the event.

We had the pleasure of having Estonian National Defence College join the event already for the 3
rd time. Numerous military experts took part in the hackathon, which resulted in 3 military-themed prototypes and a couple of ideas pitched on Friday in order to build more innovative products that they could use. The Chief of the Centre for Applied Studies/Estonian National Defence College Sten Allik is a proud supporter of the event. “With every year the Garage48 Hardware & Arts hackathons get better and better. We can say that all the other prototypes that have been made in the last years, have been finalised by us,” said Allik regarding the many defence products.

The other long-term supporter our hackathon has been Mass Portal, who since our very first event has brought their 3D printers from Latvia. The Mass Portal mentors were hard at work the whole week-end, hardly getting out of their room. An amazing 15 out of the 21 teams used their printing services. Though the best execution of their 3D print was the team was SensoDOOR, who got a special Mass Portal Award!

A special place in our hart belong to the “Crazy Latvians”. The hacker group from Latvia managed to bring home the 3rd consecutive Best Technology prize, this time for the captivating Re-Loop prototype! The hackers have earned their name out of respect – try making the whole audience laugh and still delivering the best technology solution! The Re-Loop prototype is a kinetic audio-visual installation that proved how cool arts projects can be!

The whole week-end was reported in the Postimees online website to gave the Estonian readers at home a real 24/7 experience of the event. The reports by Vahur Afanasjev and Mare Sabolotny gave insights to what really goes on at the hackathon – the wins, the struggles, the work and the outcome! Postimees, which first was released in 1857, is very hip – it also live-streamed the final event in their online channel, giving thousands of people at home the enjoyment of watching the working physical prototypes being showcased in the comfort of their home.
Naturally, we had also an English live feed managed by the SPARK Community Manager Kadri Kõivik. The cleverest marketing people of the teams used this opportunity to also market their prototypes to the readers.

We really need to thank all the mentors that took their time mentor all the teams! Hardi Volmer (Film director), Indrek Rebane (Hedgehog), Jaanus Kalde (Crystalspace), Krists Avots  (Lattelecom), Leo Selavo (University of Latvia), Marko Peterson (Mobi Solutions), Mihkel Mäll (MI/KL Industrial Design Studio), Mihkel-Emil Mikk (MI/KL Industrial Design Studio), Märt Jõesaar (Elisa), Märten Peterson (Estonian Academy of Arts, 3DLab), Nithikul Nimkulrat (Estonian Academy of Arts), Pirjo Jha (Glimstedt), Priit Salumaa (Mooncascade, Garage48), Renee Puusepp (Estonian Academy of Arts, 3DLab), Sten Allik (Estonian National Defence College), Sven Kirsimäe (Pipedrive) and Weronika Rochacka Gagliardi (Design Provision). You are amazing! Even more amazing are the mentors at the University of Tartu Digilab: Artur AbelsLauri MihkelsRenno Rehtla and Teet Tilk! You rock!

Special thanks to also our own amazing team. The real force behind this big hackathon is Anu Piirisild, who has a real girl power and the ability to move mountains! Thank you to Alvo Aabloo, Priit Salumaa, Indrek Rebane, Triin Liiv, Mariana Raudsepp, Kadri Kõivik and Kai Isand for making it all happen! Huge applause to our volunteers - Aija AuziņaJoel KotsjubaKristi VabamäeEle Merike Pärtel and our photographer Saara-Nette Tõugjas.
And the biggest thanks to our jury members, who seriously had the difficult task of choosing the winners on Sunday. The jury members were Veljo Raide (Estonian National Defence College), Priit Salumaa (Garage48, Mooncascade), Indrek Rebane (Hedgehog), Toomas Tammis (Estonian Academy of Arts), Prof. Alvo Aabloo (Tartu University) and Hardi Volmer (Film Director).
