Justice was made at Garage48 Idea Garage: e-Justice

We at Garage48 are super happy that we can partner up with the most amazing organizations. October 19th-20th were the dates that we spent at Tallinn Creative Hub (Kultuurikatel) being part of the e-Justice conference. “Idea Garage: e-Justice” was organized in cooperation with Estonian Ministry of Justice, CIVITTA Estonia and Estonian Information System Authority.
This event brought together 40 experts from various fields like legislation, insurance, the judicial system, government administration, IT and entrepreneurship.

The event kicked off Thursday morning by Elise Sass (Garage48) and Grete Gutman (CIVITTA).

The main goal of the “Idea Garage: e-Justice” was to find solutions to some of the existing challenges in the e-Justice system, using ICT solutions.

The problems were mapped already before the event and presented to the participants together with existing challenges and personal examples.

Here are the 6 problems:

1. AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE REGARDING JUDICIAL SYSTEMS IS POOR

2. UNEQUAL ACCESS TO JUSTICE AND LEGAL INFORMATION

3. COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION EXCHANGE

4. LACK OF TRUST AND AWARENESS OF THE BENEFITS OF ICT SOLUTIONS

5.COST OF CROSS-BORDER INTERACTIONS IS HIGH

6.LACK OF COOPERATION AND COORDINATION BETWEEN THE MEMBER STATES

7. LANGUAGE

8.LEGISLATIVE PROCESSES

This presentation was followed by brainstorming sessions which resulted in the formation of 4 teams:

1.Drafthub
A virtual workplace for legislation drafters that helps to structure the messy process and concentrate all items in one place.

2.Eurovisor

Code snippets for web pages to improve information sharing for travelers abroad.

3.Peter the Lawbot
An app that guides you to the best sources of legal information based on personal answers to questions.

4.Leagle

Search engine for legal experts to find correct information in shorter time-saving time and money.

Those four teams started to hack on Thursday afternoon and finished Friday just before the jury stepped into the room!

The teams were of course being guided by our amazing mentors Jaanus Sakkis (Feks Design), Maido Parv (Skype), Ilja Livenson (OpenNode), Peter Homoki (Homoki Law Firm), Kairit Kirsipuu (Courts Division),  Margit Lauri (Ministry of Justice), Anastasia Antonova (Ministry of Justice), Haldi Koit (Ministry of Justice), Alexander Ivantchev (European Commission).

Here's what Calum Cameron from Startup Wise Guys had to say about the hack: "Normal hackathons I go to have a wide mix of people who have the willingness to do or create something, but very little knowledge about the subject itself. The Idea Garage e-Justice has brought together such a great range of experts from the legal field- these people really know the problem inside out"

The two-day conference itself brought around 200 experts of the legal field, visioners of the IT sector and entrepreneurs from all around Europe to Tallinn. They discussed how to make the communication between people, companies, and representatives of the legal field more effective and convenient.

After the teams finished pitching their ideas to the conference audiences it was time for the jury to announce their decisions.  The jury consisted of Mehis Sihvart (Ministry of Justice), Gösta Petri(Ministry of Justice), Ilja Livenson (Garage48), Rain Rannu (Garage48), Riho Kurg (Startup Estonia)
